Ducted in Casula is designed around the slope and the sun. The 1970s single-storey brick veneer homes on the flatter streets near the Mall and station have a pitched tiled roof with room to work in, so a full-size fan coil goes in the centre of the cavity and rigid ducting reaches every room with short, efficient runs; we zone them as bedrooms and living, and most owners add a third zone for a rumpus or rear extension. The 1980s–90s two-storey homes on the ridge and southern slopes are a different exercise. Their upper-floor roof is lower pitched and tighter, so we use a slimline fan coil, run the return air off the upstairs landing, and give the bedrooms up there their own zone, because on a hot night that floor is where the system earns its keep.

The climate driver is the western sun on exposed ridge homes with no sea breeze to help. We size for the real afternoon load rather than floor area, and position the condenser on the southern or eastern side where it is shaded and away from a brick wall that has been baking since midday. Down on the river side near the Powerhouse the air is more humid than hot, and a ducted system there runs longer at lower output, pulling moisture out of the house on still evenings. Winter matters in Casula too, with cold clear mornings near the river, so reverse-cycle heating on the same zones is a genuine year-round benefit. Running cost sits at roughly $1–$2 per hour whole-home, and a well-zoned system in a two-storey home spends most of the evening running only the upstairs zone.
