Ducted in Green Valley is straightforward on the 1970s brick veneer homes and more considered on the Hinchinbrook two-storeys. The older single-storey homes have a pitched tiled roof with a cavity you can move around in, so a full-size fan coil sits centrally and rigid ducting reaches every room on short runs; we zone them as bedrooms and living, and add a third zone for a rear family room or a converted garage where the house has grown. The 1980s–90s two-storey homes in Hinchinbrook have a shallower upper-floor cavity, so we fit a slimline fan coil, run the return air off the upstairs landing and give the bedrooms up there their own zone, because that floor is the one that stays hot after dark.

The climate driver is exposure. These are wide, open, flat streets with no sea breeze and little shade, so a brick veneer home takes sun on three sides and the roof through the whole day. We size for that load, not the floor area, and we place the condenser on the southern or eastern side of the house, off a wall that has not been baking all afternoon, with clear airflow around it. Cold winter mornings on the open ground make the reverse-cycle heating a genuine second season for the system. Running cost is roughly $1–$2 per hour whole-home, and the zoning is where the bill is won: bedrooms only overnight, living only in the afternoon, the whole house only on the worst days.
