Most of the large period homes we measure in Wahroonga, Warrawee and Killara end up with six or more zones rather than the usual four. The count follows how the house is lived in: separate bedroom wings, formal rooms that sit empty most days, and upper and lower levels that warm at different rates. We lay out the zones after walking through the home, not from a bedroom count on a listing.

Often, but we check first. The older Federation cottages and California bungalows on these streets tend to have tighter, lower cavities than a double-storey rebuild nearby. If there is not enough depth for a standard indoor unit, we look at a slimmer unit, a different duct route, or a multi-head split for part of the house. The site measure decides, and you hear the answer before you commit to anything.

On the conservation streets of Roseville and Killara, and around the period facades of Warrawee, they can. We aim for a position out of view from the street, with room for airflow and for a technician to reach the coil. For most homes here, heating is the main reason people choose ducted. Shaded blocks under heavy canopy hold the overnight chill, and bedrooms at the back of a big house feel it first. We size the Daikin or Mitsubishi Electric inverter system for its heating output as well as its cooling, so living areas and bedrooms warm properly on winter mornings rather than taking half the day.

They mostly change where the condenser goes. Blocks backing onto Berowra Valley bushland drop leaf and bark around outdoor units and often have shaded, damp corners. We keep the unit clear of the heaviest fall, on a level base with space to reach the coil, and on sloping Mount Colah blocks we plan the pipe run and drainage around the fall of the land.
