Sometimes. Terrace roof cavities are often too shallow for a standard ducted chassis, and there is usually one workable spot for the outdoor unit, in a rear courtyard or off a laneway. If a slimline unit fits, we can zone upstairs and downstairs separately, which matters because the upper floor runs hot in summer. If it does not fit, a multi-head split is the honest answer.

It should not. We plan the duct runs from the roof space and place the grilles and return air to stay clear of ornate cornices, then cut only what the layout needs. Where roof access is limited or a ceiling is too fragile to work near, we say so at the site measure, before you commit to a design or a price.

Close to the water they need better protection. At Balmoral, Beauty Point, Clifton Gardens and the lower streets of Northbridge, salt shortens the life of an unprotected coil. We specify coastal-rated coils or protective coatings, place the condenser out of direct spray, and suggest regular fresh-water rinses. Up on the ridge around Chatswood or Artarmon, a standard unit is fine.

By level first. Homes cut into the slope have rooms at several heights that warm and cool at different rates, so bedroom count is a poor guide. We group rooms that sit on the same level and face the same way into zones, plan duct runs around raked ceilings, and size the system so each zone can run on its own without starving the others.

It should. Unrenovated ceilings with thin insulation let roof heat radiate into bedrooms on summer evenings, and a zoned system lets you cool the sleeping area on its own. We look through the roof space at the same visit, because better insulation over those rooms reduces the load the system has to carry and can change the size we recommend.
